How do we know that a visitor came from you?
The basic method of identifying a partner works via a special parameter in the link.
This clearly identifies your text campaign.
The link may look like this, for example:
Parameter ap with value ABC123 serves as a campaign identifier. Thanks to it, we know which affiliate partner brought the visitor – and to whom the commission should be credited.
Clean links without parameters (HTTP Referer)
In addition to classic affiliate links, we also enable partner recognition based on the referring page – the so-called HTTP referrer.
Simply put:
we can see where the visitor came from.
For example, if you run the website www.example.com and place a regular link to https://www.wedos.as/stranka on it, the system will look at the information about the referring page. If we have this website assigned to your affiliate account, we will automatically pair the visit with you.
Technically, it works like this: if we don't find campaign identification in the URL, we check the HTTP Referer header and compare it with our records.
Why use recognition via HTTP Referer
The main advantage is the naturalness of the link.
Some visitors notice affiliate parameters in URLs and consciously avoid them. A clean link without parameters appears more trustworthy and has a higher chance of being clicked on.
The second advantage concerns search engines. They can recognize affiliate links and, in some cases, may give them less weight. A clean link to the target page prevents this effect—it looks like a normal link to both users and search engines.
Restrictions and combinations with classic links
The use of clean links also has its limits.
All clicks from a given website are counted in a single text campaign.
With affiliate links with parameters, on the other hand, you can create multiple campaigns and accurately track the performance of individual placements—for example, a link in the menu, in an article, or in the footer.
Both methods can be combined.
If a campaign parameter is specified in the link, it always takes precedence over recognition via HTTP referrer.
How to activate this option
The assignment of a specific website to a text campaign is subject to our approval.
Not every website is suitable for this method of identification.
Once approved, all links from the given website to the target page are evaluated as provisional – not just those specifically marked.
What websites do we not accept for HTTP Referer?
- websites for which ownership or operation by a partner cannot be verifiably confirmed
- purely discussion and community websites where content and links are created by users, not the operator
We assess each case individually. If you are interested in this option, please email us at: affiliate@wedos.com.
If you encounter a problem or are unsure which promotion method is right for you, you can use the public discussion forum or contact us directly at affiliate@wedos.com.
